Fishing in Oranjestad
Posted in Uncategorized at 11:51 pm | Comments Off

Oranjestad, the capital of Aruba is situated in the southern part of the country. It is a quaint town, reminiscent of the Dutch colonial era, with buildings and houses that sport multicolored facades. Oranjestad’s beautiful marina is always bustling with private yachts, cruise ships, tour boats, and local fishing boats.

The day starts at dawn for the industrious fishermen as they set sail in the local fishing boats to return with their catch of fresh seafood. The south coast of Aruba is where all the fishing action is. These waters are home to many species of large fish like marlin. The fishermen prefer using the simple hand-line and bait as compared to nets, which are ineffective against strong winds and currents. A few local fishing boats venture into the rough sea battling against the choppy waves on the north coast of the island. The rough sea pushes fish into a pool among the limestone rocks where they are hooked by these anglers.

Oranjestad is a favorite holiday destination for fishing enthusiasts as the warm waters teem with game fish all year round. The best season is October to February. Visitors can rent local fishing boats for half a day or a full day and bait sailfish, shark, wahoo, blue and white marlin, tuna, and many more. These fishing expeditions can be booked at the hotel tour desk. Fly fishing is also popular in Aruba. Some local restaurants offer to cook the fish for visitors who want to taste their catch.

Seaport Marina by the waterfront in downtown Oranjestad is a well-protected harbor. Besides sophisticated docking facility for yachts, sea faring sloops and local fishing boats, the marina also offers a plethora of water sports, sailing, diving, and snorkeling. Submarine tours to view the rich marine life are a popular attraction with children and adults alike.
